Louisiana On Paper

George Condo

9.11.2017 - 2.4.2018

As part of the wild art scene in New York in the early 1980s, George Condo was close to painters such as Basquiat and Keith Haring and worked at Warhol's Factory applying diamond dust to silkscreen. At the same time, he found his way to his own artistic expression, which he describes as "artificial realism".

Condo (born in 1957) mixes input from art history's masters – such as Velazquez, Manet and Picasso – with elements of American Pop Art. He distorts and renews this material so that it stands out and becomes his own: a kind of strange hybrids that blur boundaries between the comic and the tragic, the grotesque and the beautiful, the classic and the innovative. His works are inventive, amusing and sometimes macabre.

Condo has never been shown in Scandinavia before, and this exhibition of his drawings from four decades – which is part of the Louisiana On Paper series – is thus a unique opportunity to become acquainted with this original artist. The Way I Think is a collaboration with The Phillips Collection i Washington, D.C.

C.L. Davids Fond og Samling supports Louisiana On Paper.

Louisiana Channel encounters George Condo in his New York studio. An artist in constant dialogue with the great masters – from Velasquez to Picasso – but at the same time concerned with portraying "the ordinary characters that make up our lives, whether it’s the janitor or the bus driver or the school teacher. These are not the glamorous people, but they are what the world is composed of. And to give them a spot in the world..."

George Condos works have been exhibited all over the world and is part of collections at some of the greatest museums in USA - MoMA, The Met, Guggenheim, etc. However his works have never been shown before in Scandinavia and therefor this exhibition is an unique oppportunity to get to know the artist. This exhibition shows 130 works and 223 sketch books created from 1974-2015.

Louisiana on Paper is a series dedicated to the presentation of graphic works, drawings and other works on paper. Often small and intimate, these exhibitions call for immersion as they present an opportunity to have a closer look at the creative processes and working methods of artists. The series is supported by the C.L. Davids Fond og Samling and has until now shown works by a.o. Josef Albers, Vija Celmins, Ellsworth Kelly, Joseph Beuys, David Hockney, Picasso and most recently George Condo.
